What is DMARC? Policy, alignment and reports explained
DMARC (RFC 7489) tells receivers what to do when mail claiming to be from your domain fails authentication, and asks them to send you reports. It's a TXT record at _dmarc.yourdomain.com:
v=DMARC1; p=quarantine; rua=mailto:dmarc@example.com; adkim=r; aspf=r
Passing DMARC
A message passes if SPF or DKIM passes and is aligned, meaning the SPF Return-Path domain or the DKIM d= domain matches the visible From domain. Under relaxed alignment (the default), subdomains count as a match.
| Tag | Meaning |
|---|---|
| p | Policy: none (monitor), quarantine (spam folder), reject |
| sp | Policy for subdomains (defaults to p) |
| rua | Where to send daily aggregate reports |
| ruf | Forensic/failure reports (few receivers send them) |
| pct | Percentage of failing mail the policy applies to |
| adkim / aspf | r = relaxed, s = strict alignment |
